Emergency Gate Rehab at Barkley Lock and Dam
Project Details
BCI was the prime contractor for this project. The project at Barkley Lock and Dam in Grand Rivers, Kentucky consisted of repairing deficiencies to the Upstream Emergency Gate including weld repair, reinforcement of known structurally deficient components, replacement of grating and recoating structure.
- Removed gate from lock chamber by marine based crane. BCI accessed on nearby lock work area.
- Gate was comprised of two main structural components; A weld box truss approximately 110′ long, 15′ wide and 15′ tall and a vertically reinforced skin plate attached to the downstream side of the truss structure. Gate weighs approximately 250 tons.
- Rehabilitation involved blasting the structure, inspecting existing welds, removing cathodic protection and replacing and adding steel plate supports to strengthen the structure.
- BCI removed the metal grating from the top walkway deck
